Action for Rivers
URGENT CALL TO ACTION: FEBRUARY 2026
URGENT: Demand action for a new and comprehensive Federal and Provincial environmental assessment!
Dear Members, Friends and Supporters:
Deadline to sign: Thursday, February 26, 2026
Following is a letter we at Grand Riverkeeper Labrador (GRK) have composed to Premier Wakeham, his MHAs, Prime Minister Mark Carney, all MPs in Newfoundland and Labrador, and The Three Man Committee reviewing the MOU on the Gull Island and related projects, with copies to the Impact Assessment Agency (IAA) in Ottawa.
We regret the short deadline for turnaround but hope you understand that we are operating without staff and with very limited finances.
We are asking for your support in signing with us to demand action for a new and comprehensive Federal and Provincial environmental assessment because of a number of critical issues both economic and environmental, that we believe have not been addressed or have been poorly addressed. We believe that the economic mandate given to the 3-man panel reviewing the MOU is lacking important considerations for costs to the not-too-distant future generations and certainly they have no mandate whatsoever to look at environmental impacts! We have outlined some of what we feel are the most egregious issues in our letter below, but these are certainly not all the critical issues of these proposed projects; a more robust list will be outlined in our larger submission on March 1, which, of course, will be shared with all of you.
Should you personally, or your Organization, agree to be signatories to this letter, please provide your Organization Name, the name of the person signing for your organization, or your individual name if you are signing on individually, and contact information (email and/or phone number), so you or your organization can be reached. If your organization has a logo that you would like us to use, please forward a jpeg copy of that as well, to Roberta Benefiel, [email protected] or to our webmaster at [email protected]
Below is the letter we are proposing to send:

THE LETTER TO BE ADDRESSED TO THE PREMIERE, THE PRIME MINISTER, ALL MHAs AND MPs FOR NFLD AND LAB as well as the 3 Man Committee reviewing the MOU, and the Impact Assessment Agency with copies to media outlets and signatories to the letter.

More about International Day of Action for Rivers
Excerpt from associated website: www.internationalrivers.org/
Every year, thousands of people around the world lift their voices to celebrate the world’s rivers and those who struggle to protect them. The International Day of Action for Rivers is a day to celebrate victories such as dam removal and river restoration. It is a day to take to the streets, demonstrate and demand improvements in the policies and practices of decision makers. It is a day to educate one another about the threats facing our rivers, and learn about better water and energy solutions. Above all, it is a day to unite – by acting together, we demonstrate that these issues are not merely local, but global in scope.
