Grand Riverkeeper Labrador and the North American Megadam Resistance Alliance are in Glasgow, Scotland at the Conference of the Parties #26 to bring the message that Mega Hydroelectric projects are a false solution to the climate crisis:
- Dams kill fresh water and marine ecosystems that fish and wildlife depend on; (that humans depend on);
- They poison traditional food sources for indigenous peoples with the neuro-toxin, methyl-mercury;
- They are notoriously over-budget leaving the most vulnerable people to pay for the costs while simultaneously dealing with the negative environmental impacts;
- They drown CO2 sequestering forests and wetlands; and produce methane which in the first 20 years after flooding can do up to 90 times more climate damage even than CO2.
We can’t afford to let the International Hydro Association (IHA) continue spewing lies about mega-hydro being the energy solution the world needs to slow climate change! We cannot allow mega-hydro projects to continue to receive green subsidies from taxpayers!
